WHO Raises Warning Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Medications

Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy have access to them, warns the global health agency as it issues its initial advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide now obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, more than two billion will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines recognises that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key barriers to broad access to the injections that can help people shift substantial weight, says the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Despite the present best projected scenario, the supply of such drugs would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the WHO.

The recommendation calls on governments and firms to increase availability, by approaches like patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of a leading brand – is due to expire in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a natural hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and increase satiety so individuals reduce food intake.

People usually start to lose weight after several weeks of commencing the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may regain a significant portion within a year of discontinuing the drug, when their usual food cravings return.

To be overweight or obese increases your chance for experiencing medical conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity impacts people in every country and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
