The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Whenever a major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
